The Most Virtuous Ceremony: Confucius Memorial Ceremony
Confucianism has a far-reaching influence on Chinese culture. As early as 2004, Quzhou began to hold the “International Confucius Culture Festival & Confucius Memorial Ceremony in Quzhou, China”. In May 2011, the Southern Confucius Memorial Ceremony was listed in the third batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage List and thus became a national treasure.
The Southern Confucius Memorial Ceremony has two characteristics: “contemporary memorial ceremony” and “common people’s memorial ceremony”. Today’s ceremony not only includes offering the five cereals rice, the four treasures of the study (i.e. writing brush, ink stick, ink slab, paper) and flower baskets, incense, burning candles, bowing to the statue of Confucius, and the officiant reciting the “Sacrifice to Confucius”, but also embodies the concept of “contemporary people worshipping Confucius”. The participants wear modern clothing and perform modern etiquette; play piano instead of the ancient instruments to sing “Ode to Great Unity”; change the magnificent and grand traditional dance of worshipping Confucius into representatives from all walks of life reciting chapters from the Analects. People listen to the melodious recitation in front of the Southern Confucius Temple, and in the solemnity, they silently comprehend the profoundness of Confucian culture. This ceremony is committed to reviving traditional Confucianism and promoting the innovative development of contemporary Confucianism.
The Most Virtuous Ceremony in Growth Period: Three Ceremonies
In order to bring the culture of “virtue” into the campus and enable young people to learn and appreciate etiquette, Quzhou has established the “Three Ceremonies” for students: the Enlightenment Ceremony (at the age of 6), the Mingzhi Ceremony (at the age of 14), and the Grown-up Ceremony (at the age of 18).
The Enlightenment Ceremony is the first big ceremony in life, marking the breaking of ignorance and the opening of wisdom. The Enlightenment Ceremony includes procedures like tidying up the dress and hat, honoring teachers, pointing cinnabar to open up wisdom, drawing red with a pen, and drumming to express one’s aspirations.
The Mingzhi Ceremony includes initiating aspirations, writing the aspirations, expressing the aspirations by tying the belt, announcing the aspirations by reciting, and finally students walk through the Mingzhi Gate with the parents. The Grown-up Ceremony is held in high school, during which students express gratitude to their parents, understand responsibility, and set their dreams free. Accompanied by parents and teachers, young students walk through the Grown-up Gate and shoulder new rights and obligations.
Without learning etiquette, one cannot stand firm. The “Three Ceremonies” for students fully integrate the culture of virtue into the entire process of education, cultivate students’ norms from an early age, and plant the seeds of learning traditional Chinese culture in the hearts of every child.
The Most Virtuous Greeting: Zuo Yi
In different occasions in Quzhou, people can be seen using Zuo Yi to greet each other. In performing Zuo Yi, people bow to others, which presents Chinese people being humble and respectful. In Quzhou, Zhejiang, Zuo Yi has gradually been promoted. The Zuo Yi in formal occasions is roughly as follows: people’s palms join together (men cover their right hand with their left hand, and women cover their left hand with their right hand). People press thumbs down. The two arms are like embracing a drum. People keep their bodies upright and stand with their legs straight, leaving about a fist’s distance between their feet—The facial expression should be solemn. It not only helps people maintain a healthy social distance, but also helps the traditional culture to return to people’s daily life and form a living culture to radiate its vitality in the modern society.
The Most Virtuous Art: the Musical “Southern Confucius”
In Quzhou, there is a special musical called “Southern Confucius”, which uses stories, music and dance to introduce more people to Southern Confucius and Quzhou in an energetic way.
The musical “Southern Confucius” takes Kong Zhu as the protagonist and tells the story of Kong Zhu's life in achieving “virtue” in his heart. “Virtue” underpins the musical. The Southern Confucian family established their home in Quzhou, and have persisted in spreading Confucianism even in their toughest time. This is actually a process of guarding and inheriting “virtue”.
This is a graceful incorporation of culture and art, allowing people to relive the long history and culture of Quzhou, feel the profound “virtue” and experience the magnificent Confucius culture in the south of the Yangtze River.

This adheres to the principle of “making the Southern Confucian culture visible” and tell passersby about it in a way that is close to life. In different places in this city, classic words and phrases from the Analects as well as stories related to Southern Confucius are written or painted on white walls. People can stop at any time to learn some knowledge of the Analects or Confucian stories. The Most Virtuous Mascots: “Grandpa Nankong”
“Grandpa Nankong” is the mascot of Quzhou City. The image of Grandpa Nankong seems like the image of Confucius in an amiable way. The mascot looks quite lovely and kind, like a teacher or friend living in our life. His hair bun is a scroll of calligraphy and painting, representing his erudition. His thick eyebrows covering the eyes represent the reflective and thoughtful spirit; the heart-shaped beard represents that his education is fulfilled with love. He is greeting the world with Zuo Yi and show the world the “virtue” culture in Quzhou.
